Harry & Harriet
Go Get Their 1st Haircut
By: Darcie Mae
1
Harry & Harriet
are twins, a boy and girl.
They wanted to come out
the same time at their birth.
Harry was the winner.
He was the first one born.
Harriet followed him.
She was the second born.
They’re no longer babies.
Pretty soon they’ll start school.
They both have asked to start
with a brand new hairdo.
Harry & Harriet
Have been growing their hair
Since the day they were born.
They sit it on it on chairs.
3
Harry wears his hair in
one long braid down his back.
He also always wears
his favorite ball cap.
Harriet wears her hair
in two very long braids.
At the end of each one
are ribbons she has made.
Harry likes to wear green
t-shirts. His pants are blue.
He wears black sneakers and
gray socks inside them too.
Harriet likes to wear
two black boots on her feet.
She wears gray tights not socks.
The tights cover her feet.
5
She wears a purple skirt,
and she wears a pink shirt.
The ribbons on her braids
are purple like her skirt.
As a matter of fact
her braids are longer than
her skirt, and how far she
can reach down with her hands.
They have the longest hair
of everyone around.
Lots of attention and
compliments they both found.
But, now their five years old.
Soon they’ll be starting school.
They both want to start with
a fresh, brand new hairdo.
7
Their mom has already
made appointments for them.
They will get their hair cut.
Neither one of them’s been.
Harry & Harriet
have grown their long hair since
the day they both were born.
That’s five years for each kid.
Their hair goes down their backs,
and over their butts too.
It is always in braids.
They both want something new.
Their mom called the Salon.
Two appointments she made.
Harry & Harriet
get new hairdos this day.
9
They will get their hair cut
for the first time this day.
They were excited and,
nervous too they did say.
Harry & Harriet
dressed like they always do.
Harriet’s pink, purple,
and Harry’s green and blue.
They were outside waiting
for their mom to come out.
It’s time to go when their
mom walks out of the house.
Harry’s belly ached some.
Harriet’s was aching more.
They jumped and stood up when
opening was the door.
11
Their mom told them it was
time to go now with me.
They walked to the salon.
It is just up the street.
The door was open at
the Salon this nice day.
Harry & Harriet
heard music at the place.
The radio was on
a popular station.
It made them relax some
as both of them walked in.
Harry & Harriet
were met as they walked in
by two hair cutters who
looked at their hair and grinned.
13
One walked to Harriet
and said, “Hi there. Hello.
Welcome to our Salon.
I’m Jill and this is Joe.”
Joe walked towards Harry.
He looked at his long braid.
He said, “Hello Harry.
I’ll cut your hair today.”
Their mother was busy
with the receptionist,
who told her about a
thing she should tell her kids.
She went to tell her kids
the hair that they cut off
can be donated to
a place called, Locks of Love.
15
The hair they donate will
be made into a wig
that can be worn when done
by a very sick kid.
Harriet introduced
Jill then to her mother.
Her mom said, “Please take good
care of my young daughter.”
Jill said, “Have no worries.
Your daughter’s safe with me.”
She took Harriet and
helped her up in a seat.
Harry introduced Joe
to his mom and she said,
“You’d best not harm even
one hair upon his head.”
17
Joe said, “No worries ma’am.
Your son is safe with me.”
He took Harry and helped
him sit in a cool seat.
Harry & Harriet,
while sitting in their chairs,
got to go for a short
ride higher in the air.
They were covered up with
a cloth that wrapped around
them and hooked at the neck.
It draped down to the ground.
Jill said, “Remember kids,
off to Locks of Love they go.
You’re helping sick kids who
have lost their hair you know.
19
You both are doing a
wonderful thing today.
Sick kids will be thankful
for the wigs your hair makes.”
Harry & Harriet
relaxed and gave a smile.
Joe and Jill cut their hair.
It took just a short while.
“I’m done.” said Harriet.
Harry said, “I’m done too.
Come on mom, come and see
your children’s new hairdo.”
Joe and Jill took bibs off,
and swept up cut off hair.
Their mom came in the room.
At her children she stared.
21
She said, “Oh my goodness.
You are handsome Harry,
and Harriet you are
so cute, a real beauty.”
Jill helped Harriet down.
Joe helped Harry down too.
They looked in the mirror
at their brand new hairdos.
They looked at themselves first,
then at each other next.
They looked so different.
Neither one a word said.
They reached up and they ran
their fingers through their hair.
Harriet said, “I like
my hairdo.” as she stared.
23
Harry said, “Yes, I like
mine too. It is so light.
Now my favorite ball
cap fits my head just right.”
Harry said thanks to Joe,
and Harriet thanked Jill,
while mom went to pay the
receptionist the bill.
The receptionist told
her the hair cuts are free
‘cause they gave their hair to
Locks of Love, yes-sir-ree.
“Are you ready to go?”
their mother asked them both.
At the same time they said,
“Yes mommy. Let’s go home.”
25
Harry, Harriet, and
their mother walked outside.
The sky was blue and a
bright yellow sun did shine.
Some people stared at them.
Some people whispered things.
“Do you like our brand new
hairdos?” the twins would sing.
Harry & Harriet
skipped all the way back home.
They loved their new hairdos.
Everyone they did show.
When home they got out all
the things they’d need for school.
School starts on the next day.
They are both ready too.
27
Harry & Harriet
ate, bathed, and went to bed.
“Goodnight. Sleep tight. Mommy
loves you.” their mother said.
Harry asked Harriet,
“What do you think the kids
will have to say about
our hair? Will they like it?”
Harriet said, “Harry
I like my new hairdo.
I don’t care what the kids
say tomorrow at school.”
Harry said, “Goodnight Sis.”
Harriet said, “Goodnight.”
Before they knew it the
morning came with day light.
29
Their mother called to them
saying, “Time to get up.
Harry & Harriet
you must have time enough,
to eat your breakfast and
get all ready for school.
Today is your first day.
Get up the both of you.”
Harry & Harriet
got up and made their beds.
For breakfast it is milk
and cereal they’d get.
They washed faces and hands.
They brushed their hair and teeth.
They got dressed for school and
told their mom their ready.
31
She looked them all over
from their heads to their toes.
She said, “You are ready.
Off to the bus you go.”
Harry & Harriet
waited with mom outside
for the school bus to come
and it was right on time.
Harry & Harriet
told their mother goodbye.
They got on the school bus.
All of their friends said, “Hi.”
Harry sat beside the
window and with a friend.
Harriet did the same.
They’re just alike. They’re twins.
33
Harry & Harriet’s
friends loved their new hairdos,
and they both had a fun,
happy 1st day of school.
The End
